The lady in the lake is a detective novel written by Raymond Chandler. This novel is about Detective Philip Marlowe is looking for Derace Kingsley’s wife, Crystal. Is she dead or not? Marlowe finds more than one dead body and learns about women, drugs, men in love, and a police cover-up. Who killed The Lady in the Lake and why?
I choose another detective novel by Raymond Chandler to see the differences between his works. The more I read, the more I admire how the author designs the plot of crime. Whenever I read a detective novel, I read fast and can't wait to know who the murderer is. When I almost finish the story, there's sometimes a plot twist that reverses what I've speculated. It is the surprise that makes me enjoy the detective novels a lot.
Also, I found out the law regarding the detective novel. It's complicated relationships. Every character has a slight connection with the dead so that everyone is likely to be the murderer. That's the necessity to keep a story going on. But sometimes, there are too many relationships to figure out in the novel. At this moment, I'll skip those plots and jump to the ending. Am I an impatient reader? I don't know. I just want to know who the murderer is without too much setup. (lol)
The trigger of murder is love in this book. It's somehow related to social issues nowadays. Love can be a driving force behind a crime. For instance, people kill their lovers because they fail to get back together. That's what we call "horror lovers." In other cases, some celebrities get killed by their extreme fans. Love is supposed to be a pleasant feeling between people. How come it would be a potential motive of the crime? To think carefully, when the love toward someone grows stronger, what you will feel is definitely more than jealousy or something else. I can somehow resonate with this kind of situation. For instance, as a fan of BTS, whenever I see or hear people leave hate comments, I always think of replying to those haters by saying nasty words and wishing all the bad things happen to them. But I don't want to be a hater of those haters. I choose to be rational in the virtual and the real world. Therefore, I think whether love becomes the trigger of the crime depends on the rationality of humans.
Hi, Heny~
ReplyDeleteI have the same feeling as you that I only want to know who is the actual murderer when I have lost my patience to read or watch the detective novel or drama. Actually, I love the process that the actors or characters found the evidence and analyzed the whole incident; however, I also had the contradictory feeling when the entire process was overlong, and I was exhausted to guess what would happen next and eager to know the end of the incident. Thus, I can totally relate.
Moreover, for the example that you put forward, I could say that you really say what I want to point out that most fans will always make those kinds of mistakes. Frankly speaking, even though I am a devoted fan of my idol, I still can't realize what kind of mindset drives those "Sasaeng fans" to do that crazy actions. Sometimes, we would view many negative comments to criticize our idol, and I have to admit that I TRULY have the urge to post lots of offensive words to protect my idol. However, after keeping my cool, I have found that there's one principle we have to realize, especially for us, the fangirl. Hatred would post many words on the Internet to judge our idol; however, we couldn't care about all of them, whether positive or negative, because there might be dozens of, millions of, or even trillions of opinions on both the virtual world and reality world. You know that we can't afford all the pressure from those words, which might be full of emotions. Thus, what we could do is only to support our idol by our authentic heart, no matter who said. We like our idol because of a specific characteristic of the person that attracts us, not the evaluation of it by the outside world, so stick to our own principles and continue to love them; our life will be because of idols to be better.(*´∀`)
Hello, Heny. This is Chiho. For me, whatever type of love is, it is the thing that can effortlessly drive me insane and lose my tolerance. Whenever I love someone too much, I would complete something people, well, even I can't imagine. I totally agree that you said “whether love becomes the trigger of the crime depends on the rationality of humans .“ However, I also think it is very difficult to control myself when someone or something I love comes closer to me like until almost I can hunt, it makes me feel like a dog that was deprived their dog food or preys, and some people just can't control themselves to get it because for them, it is the thing they want to earn the most. They don't need anything else even their lives if they could hunt it.
ReplyDeleteHello, Heny!
ReplyDeleteWe have the same habit of skipping the plots of the story. Hence, I only care about the truth behind in the end. But it sometimes will dismiss the appealing background story of the characters. Now, I am trying to solve this issue. Hence, all settings have the meaning of adding to the plot. If you like the puzzling story, I highly recommend "Parasite", a film narrative of the lower class in Korea.
In addition, I like how you show the unique sides of love. To me, love is like water. The water that bears the boat is the same that swallows it up. Love makes me want to become a better person. On the other side, I become so sensitive, insecure, and jealous. In my view, love is the emotional side of being a human. And we can’t live without it, or we will become a robot with no compassion. Let me set the record straight; love is the training to balance yourself. When talking to love, humans always lose their minds; thus, if you could fix the issue in it. Individuals will become more mature and street smart.

Dear Heny, I love how you conclude this book:the trigger of the murder is love". As a fan of detective series, I assure you more than 80% of sophisticating, well-preparing murder are triggered by love. Love, how amazingly this word can be so pure yet evil at the same time. I need to confess I am kinda obsessed with this kind of unbalanced love (only in fictions). Maybe I am the one who is outta her mind?
ReplyDeleteI am not a fan of detective novels, although I have always wanted to try them. But I can feel that reading this genre always needs a lot of patience! I agree with you that when you become a fan of someone, you would be angry when seeing malicious comments; however, we should always choose to be nice instead of venting anger on others!
